About

HELLO, I’m karlie joy!

I’m a multidisciplinary artist, wearing many hats in the creative realm—painter, illustrator, collager, designer, collector, baker, embroiderer, framer, maker… what else? A mom, wife, bad dancer, cheese lover, thrifter, mental health advocate, marketer, and garden lover. Call me a Jack (Jill?) of all trades.

My artistic practices are how I explore the endless curiosities of the world, as well as the continuous thoughts and ideas mentally revolving as someone with ADHD. Being able to transfer the quantity and volume of “brain” noise through creating helps me find momentary quiet. Communicating my abstract thoughts and anxieties into something tangible is like releasing pressure from an internal compressor.

My work is heavily inspired by nature’s organic forms and Lake Superior. Having a deep respect for Gitchi Gummi is something that was instilled in me from the youngest age. Yes, her waters are beautiful, but they are infinitely more powerful and ruthless; a true juxtaposition of soft and hard. I find this to be the case in much of my work as well––combining soft, organic elements with hard and bold counterparts.

As far as my process goes, many times, I begin with just plopping the colors I’m feeling drawn to onto a substrate. Focusing on the general composition of color volume, versus a specific form, allows me the space to create without restraint or thinking of the end result. I enjoy experimenting with different mediums and techniques, allowing each piece to evolve organically.

Becoming a mother has added a new layer of inspiration, infusing my art with the innocence of childhood and the tender nuances of motherhood. Just as I seek balance in life between work, play, and parenting, I strive for conceptual and compositional harmony in my art. Through shape, hue, and texture, I aim to capture the rhythm of life's delicate dance. I hope to bring joy to others, infusing each piece with a sense of light and comfort.

Currently based in Saint Paul, MN, I hold an MFA in Graphic Design from the University of Minnesota and a BFA in Graphic Design from Austin Peay State University.
